BGP seize pillars from a villager in Maungdaw

Maungdaw, Arakan State:  Burma Border Guard Police (BGP) under Aley Than Kyaw village tract of Maungdaw Township seized pillars of a house from a Rohingya villager on March 12, Mohin from Maungdaw south said.
On being tipped off, a group of BGP personnel accompanied by Sayed Alam, the village Admin officer went to Khonzabill village and arrested Ms. Razzan Begum (36), wife of Habib Ullah- the owner of pillars, which were kept inside house compound, he added.

Getting permission from concerned authority — District Admin Officer (Kayaka), Township Admin Officer (Mayaka) and Forest Department for construction of her house and to cut some pillars from the forest, but she did not take permission from Aley Than Kyaw BGP camp, according to Ms. Razzan Begum.

As a result, BGP seized 219 pieces of pillars, logs, etc. (house building materials) from the compound and she was brought to BGP camp where she was detained. However, some village elders went to BGP camp in the evening and come back to her house, according to villagers.

However, she presented again to Aley Than Kyaw BGP camp on March 13 and BGP demanded huge money to released, said a relative of the victim. “She was released after giving the money.”

Normally, Rohingya villagers are barred from construction houses in the villages, even villagers need permission from the concerned authority to renovate the houses, said Hakim, a village elder from the village.
