BGP extort money from Rohingya villagers

Maungdaw, Arakan State: Burmese Border Guard Police (BGP) of Inn Din BGP camp are harassing and extorting money from Rohingya villagers over the allegation of using Bangladeshi cell phones and communicating with foreign countries, Mohin from Maungdaw said. Recently, BGP personnel from Inn Din BGP camp are going to Kyauk Pun Dhu (Sitar Pawrika) village of Maungdaw south and arresting Rohingya villagers including women over the false allegations of using Bangladeshi cell phone to extort money, he more said.

According to villagers, mostly Rohingya villagers are using Burmese cell phones in Arakan State as the network of Bangladesh is not available in Arakan State, at the present time.

A woman said on condition of anonymity, “BGP from Inn Din camp arrested and extorted 100,000 Kyat from me over the false allegation of using Bangladeshi cell phone on March 1, but I have been using Burmese cell phone with Burmese Sim since long.”

BGP personnel go secretly to every house (door to door) at night and listening of mobile calls who are talking over mobile phones. If BGP get information of using Bangladeshi mobile, he/she will be arrested and beaten up without any question, she more added.

However, many villagers were arrested from Kyauk Pun Dhu (Sitar Pawrika) village and released after taking Kyat 100,000 to 300,000, according to villagers’ capacity, said Samir, an elder from the village.

A Rohingya youth said, “Rohingyas become income source of BGP.”
