BGP’s arbitrary arrests in Maungdaw south

Maungdaw, Arakan State: Burma’s Border Guard Police (BGP) of Aley Than Kyaw village of Maungdaw Township arbitrarily arrested Rohingya people in Maungdaw south, Mohin, a well-wisher from Maungdaw said. One of the arrestees named Hafizur Rahaman (28), son of Mogul, hailed from Sommona village of Maungdaw Township. He along with his family members went to visit his father-in-law’s house in Khonzabill village yesterday night. He was arrested by BGP as he didn’t inform guest list to village Admin officer of Khonzabill because Sommona village is a neighboring village to Khonzabill village, Mohin further said.

Being tipped off, a group of police personnel accompanied by village Admin officer Sayed Alam and his collaborator Fayazullah of Khonzabill village went to Salim Ullah’s (father-in-law) home and arrested the victim yesterday, at around 12:00 pm, according to villagers.

After arrest, he was tortured on the spot in front of the villagers. The group was led by the police officer Khin Win, the villagers more added.

However, later on, he was released after taking 200,000 Kyat, said a relative of the victim on that day.

Moreover, another BGP group (three members) of Aley Than Kyaw arrested three women from the Maungdaw-Aley Than Kyaw Highway nearby Khonzabill village on November 27, at around 9:00 am while returning to their homes Shitapurika village from Aley Than Kyaw village after visiting their relatives, according to a village elder named Petin Ali.

Nevertheless, BGP personnel U Hla Sein, U Aung San Oo and U Thein fined them Kyat 300,000 and were released the same day, Petin Ali more added.

One local businessman said, “It is nothing to BGP whether they extort money or arbitrary arrests.”
