Locals demonstrate against Rohingya ‘not to settle’ in Noakhali

Chittagong, Bangladesh: Local Bangladeshi people including some students from Noakhali demonstrated against settling of Bangladesh registered Rohingya refugees in Hatia (Island),Noakhali on June 2, according to Noakhalinews report. “The local don’t want Rohingya refugees in Noakhali and will be burden for the people of Hatia Island. The area is now peaceful,” the newspaper more report.

According to sources, the demonstration was held in front of Noakhali press club on June 2 noon.

Ariful Islam Arif and Razak, the leaders of students association said, more than 100 years ago, at about 100,000 families were demolished by erosion. But, the rights of those families were not provided by the government, but now the government is trying to settle the Rohingya refugees in the place.

However, the local people don’t want the Rohingya refugees in the said area. So, “We urge the Bangladesh government not to settle Rohingya refugees in our land,” Arif further said.

When asked to a refugee elder, he said, “We have been living in the refugee camps of Cox’s Bazar district over two decades, but we don’t get any durable solution and living in miserable condition at small huts. So, we the registered Burmese Rohingya refugees from Nayapara and Kutupalong camps are unwilling to move to Hatia Island in Noakhali from the existent camps for the lack of life security there. This place is frequently flooded in rainy season.”
