Fourteen Bangladeshi prisoners returned home

Teknaf, Bangladesh:  Fourteen Bangladeshi nationals were returned to Bangladesh from Burma on May 19 after finishing their jail terms, Nurul Aktar, a local from Teknaf town said. According to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) official, a flag meeting was held between BGB and Burma’s Border Guard Police (BGP) at Maungdaw and discussed various issues on Burma-Bangladesh border for two hours on May 19.

From Bangladesh sides, 14-member of BGB participated in the flag meeting led by a BGB officer Mohammed Zakaria of Teknaf Battalion No. 42 while 14-member of BGP participated in the meeting led by one officer of BGP U Tun Tun, the official more added.

After the meeting, 14 Bangladeshi nationals were handed over to Border Guard Bangladesh by BGP.

The released person were jail for  illegal entering Burma while they tried to travel by rickety boat  for Malaysia earlier, said Lt Col Abu Zar Al-Jahid, the Commanding officer of BGB-42 Battalion of Teknaf.

One of the released prisoners Sayed said that more than 88 boatpeople were along with an engine boat left for Malaysia in 2009 while the engine of boat was suddenly gave trouble in the sea. During this time, the Burmese patrol naval force approached to us and arrested and imprisoned in Burmese jail.

He also said many Bangladeshi nationals have been, mostly boat-people languishing in Burmese jails.
