Fighting between police and smugglers in Cox’s Bazar

Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh:   Early on September 9, there was a gunfight between police and Yaba smugglers in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.  The Yaba tablets are being smuggled into Bangladesh from Burma, according to Detective Branch(DB)  police official of Cox’s Bazar.   “At least four people, including three policemen were injured in the gunfight.”

They had secret information that some smugglers were selling Yaba in the district nearby jail area on the Bypass road in the district town, Officer-in-Charge of DB Manjurul Alam said.

Sub-inspector Titu Datta of the district Detective Branch of police and Yaba trader Nazrul Islam (31), son of Abul Hossain of Teknaf were admitted with critical condition at Cox’s Bazar government hospital (Sadar Hospital), the DB official added.

A team of plainclothes police launched a drive in the area around 3.00 am today.

When the police team challenged the Yaba traders, the smugglers opened fire at them, promoting the law enforces to fire back leaving three policemen, including SI Titu and Yaba smuggler Nazrul, injured, according to sources.

Nazrul is undergoing treatment with bullet injuries under police custody.

The DB team also recovered 2,050 pieces of Yaba tablets, one short gun and two rounds of cartridge from the spot, said an aide of police.

Thousands of Yaba tablets have been smuggled to Bangladesh from Burma by different smuggling groups who live at Burma-Bangladesh border, but the concerned authorities of Bangladesh are unable to stop Yaba smuggling, said a local trader on condition of anonymity.

Earlier, there was another fighting between security forces and Yaba smugglers at Teknaf, a border town of Bangladesh and some people were killed and injured including police. Regarding this, Bangladesh took stern action against the smugglers, and some smugglers were shot dead and some were sent to jail.

It is very important to stop the Yaba smuggling with the cooperation of two neighboring countries, said a local leader from Teknaf who denied to be named.
