Army and Rakhines destroy properties of Rohingya in Maungdaw

Maungdaw, Arakan State:  Amy and Rakhine villagers of Marawaddy have been destroying properties of Rohingyas and harassing cowboys since third week of June, Lala from Aley Than Kyaw village said.

“A group of Rakhines from Marawaddy village went to betel farms of Rohingya villagers nearby forest and destroyed some of betel farms on June 18, at about 11: 00 am. After destroying, they took away bamboos and small woods, which have been used in the farms, for their houses.”

The Rakhine villagers also met with some Rohingya cowboys close to forest where they were grazing their cattle. The cowboys were severely beaten up by the Rakhine villagers and snatched their things.

A village elder said on condition of anonymity that one of the cowboys was also stabbed and seriously wounded, maybe, he would die if he did not take proper treatment.

The cowboy is identified as Yasin (20), son of Mohamed Shafi, hailed from Khonza Bill village of Aley Than Kyaw village tract under the Maungdaw Township.

Besides, on June 22, a group of army personnel from Marawaddy army out-post also destroyed betel farms of Rohingya in Maungdaw south, said one of the betel farm owners preferring not to be named.

A Rohingya villager told the Kaladanpress on condition of anonymity, “A group of Rakhines and army of Marawaddy have been destroying our betel farms since 3rd week of June, 2014.

“We are very disappointed regarding our poverty because of losing everything since 2012, the villager further said.”

“The local authority accompanied by Rakhine villagers is destroying the properties of Rohingya villagers is a systematic and planned way for uprooting Rohingya community’s livelihood  from Arakan soil.” said a Rohingya elder.
