The government of Burma/Myanmar had conducted the scheduled nationwide UN sponsored census on 30 March-10 April. But it has discriminately excluded the entire Rohingya population from the census for self-identifying their Rohingya ethnicity.
The government has now resumed enumeration in northern Arakan/Rakhine State threatening the Rohingya people once again to identify as Bengali, a term that implies they are illegal immigrants from neighbouring Bangladesh.
On 10 June the Commander of the infamous Lon Htin police forces summoned Rohingya village elders to its headquarters at Kyiganbyin, Maungdaw, and threatened that those who refuse to record or insist to identify as Rohingya instead of Bengali would be stripped of their houses and properties and that they would not be allowed to live in Burma.
Backing out from its earlier promises made to UN and donor countries that the census would be conducted in line with the international standards allowing anyone to self-identify his ethnicity, now the Rohingya people have been tyrannized to give in to the pressure of the authorities to enumerate as Bengali. This is a deliberate treachery on the part of the government.
We, the undersigned Rohingya organizations strongly condemn the Burmese/Myanmar government for its current method of census collection using threat and intimidation in order to denationalize and ethnocide the whole Rohingya population.
We urge upon the UN, international community and donor countries to intervene in Arakan with the objective of protecting the defenceless Rohingya; to pressurize the Myanmar government to stop forthwith all terrorization against Rohingya, and to allow them to self-identify their Rohingya ethnicity in a properly conducted census.
