BGP hands over 32 Bangladeshi prisoners to BGB

Teknaf, Bangladesh: Border Guard Police (BGP) of Burma handed over 32 Bangladeshi Released Prisoners (RP) to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) yesterday, according to BGB official.
“The prisoners were released through the flag meeting between two countries —Burma and Bangladesh— as the prisoners of Bangladesh had finished their various jail terms.”

According to BGB source, eight members of BGB went to Maungdaw (Burma) and held a flag meeting with Border Guard Police of Burma on June 17 at about 9:00 am. The group was led by the Company Commander Jakoria of Teknaf Battailon No. 42.
BGB source also said that it discussed different issues with BGP, regarding the Bangladesh-Burma border and RP who had been languishing in Burmese jail.

After discussion, BGP handed over 32 Bangladeshi RP to BGB, said an aide of BGB.

Among the released prisoners, most of them were woodcutters, fishermen and boatpeople. They are hailed from Teknaf area of Cox’s Bazar district.

When asked a release prisoner named Kholil over mobile phone, he said that he was arrested from the Naff River by Nasaka (former border security force) personnel earlier while he was fishing in the Bangladesh territorial waters.

According to different sources, many Bangladeshi woodcutters and fishermen have been languishing in Burmese jail, so far.
