Gunfight between BGB and smugglers at Teknaf

Teknaf, Bangladesh:  A gunfight was happened between Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and a gang of smugglers- dealing drug in the border- at Teknaf under Cox’s Bazar district on Friday night, said Yunus from the locality.
“At least five people, including four BGB men, were injured in the gun fight at Moulvi Para, one mile from Teknaf.”

The injured BGB personnel were identified as Khorshed Alam, Nurul Islam, Mohamamd Abdul Majid and Mintu Das, according to a BGB aide from Nila.

On secret information, a consignment of Yaba tablets was coming from Burma through Naf River at Teknaf. So, a team of BGB 42- battalion, led by its commanding officer Lt Col Abujar Al Jahid, went to the spot around 10:00 pm, according to BGB official.

When a boat of smugglers anchored in the aforesaid area, the BGB team challenged it as per their information. The smugglers had arms with them. Sensing danger, the smugglers opened fire on border guards prompting the BGB men to fire back, triggering a gunfight. A chase and counter-chase took place during the hour-long gun battle, according to a BGB officer.

Four BGB men sustained injuries, some of them seriously. The injured were rushed to the Teknaf Upazila Health Complex.

One of the criminals was also injured in the gunfight. BGB arrested Mohamamd Ismail (42), an alleged smuggler, from the spot.

The drug consignment came from Burma, but it is impossible to hold arms with them as nobody can hold arms in Maungdaw. It may be arm forces of Burma, who are involved in drug smuggling. It may be also from Bangladeshi drug smugglers who hold arms to protect their consignment, said a businessman from Teknaf who deny to mention his name.

A local businessman from the locality said, “We never heard fighting between BGB and smugglers in Teknaf border area before.”

It is cleared that the arms group is familiar with arms and they handled it very smart as they injured four BGB personnel, the businessman said.
