Police arrests a villager in Maungdaw south

Maungdaw, Arakan State: Police personnel from Sommona (Marrawady) police camp arrested a Rohingya villager on November 11, at night, said Hussain (not real name). The arrestee has been identified as Ayub, 25; son of Mohamed Nazir, hailed from Khonza Bill village of Aley Than Kyaw under the Maungdaw Township.

Ayub was arrested from his home without giving any reason by police in front of village admin officer on that night. The police were on duty of night patrol in the village, said a relative of the arrestee on condition of anonymity.

Ayub was detained and kept in the police camp where his was tortured mentally and physically in the police custody, the relative said.

However, police demanded 300,000 kyat for his release, but he was unable to fulfill their demand as he is a poor man, according to villagers.

The police filed a case –involved in the riot in 2012 June with so-called arrest warrant list and sent to Maungdaw police yesterday, said an aide of police.

The aide also said that many Rohingya villagers were arrested and sent to jail with so-called arrest warrant list by the concerned authority of Maungdaw after occurring unrest 2012.
