Army harass Rohingya fishermen in Maungdaw south

Maungdaw, Arakan State:  Army personnel stationed in Kharay May Natala village, Maungdaw south, are harassing Rohingya fishermen while passing the station, said a fishing businessman from Maungdaw.

“The Kharay May Natala village is situated on Maungdaw- Alay Than Kyaw highway road near Bagonena village and whenever fishermen carrying their fishes to Maungdaw market with Taxicab, the army personnel from this station took best fishes without paying the money.”

The fishermen tried to sell their fishes in Maungdaw market to get more money but now the army personnel took the best fishes which one is most costly. The fishermen had no chosen – fishes without money- for this harassment and become less profit which harm their business to run, said an owner of fishing boat from Maungdaw south.

The authority from Maungdaw together with security force always harassing fishermen to sell their fishes so called agent with low prices, when the fishermen try to sell their fishes in Maungdaw market, the security force and authority are making problem to them when the fishermen carrying their fishes to Maungdaw, the boat owner said.

“The fishing business is controlling by agent which the authority had given the permission to collect fee from fishermen, fishing net and fishing boat. The agent collected money from us very high which made our business to run very hard.”

Most of fishermen are from Maungdaw south and the authority and security force have always eyed on them to harass and to take fishes from them. The authority and security force only took the fishes which one is the very goods and high prices. The fishermen doesn’t want to give these good fishes to them, but they are unable to protect their fishes. So the fishermen become poor and close their fishing business in future, said a village admin officer from Maungdaw south.

The security force on the highway collect toll from fishermen who carry their fishers with Taxicab. More than 10 outposts along the Maungdaw- Alay Than Kyaw highway road. Every outposts took fishes from fishermen and how much they will sell in the market to run their fishing business.”
