Maungdaw, Arakan State: Burma border security force (Nasaka) are using old tactics again to extort money from Rohingya community in Maungdaw south, said an village admin officer.“Nasaka forced to Rohingya community through the village admin officer to pay for renting permission of Bangladeshi mobile phone used or not. The Nasaka is demanding 10000 kyats per house per month for mobile using.”
The Nasaka commander of area number 5, demanded kyat 1000,000 per month for using of mobile phone from Oo Shingya village , starting from this month, said an elder from the village. “I am not using any mobile phone, but I had to pay kyat 10,000 for mobile to the Nasaka through the village admin officer.”
Similarly, Molana Muhibullah son of Mohamed Rashid,45, hailed from Pyeu Hma Kanyintan ( Kasari Bill) was arrested and released after taking Kyat 120,000 on allegation of using Bangladeshi mobile phone on July 10 at about 10:30pm by 17 Nasaka personnel who enter his home at night to extort money with keeping one mobile phone in the house, according to villagers.
“Molana Muhibullah is not using any mobile in the village, but the Nasaka kept a mobile in his home after entering home at night and accused him using mobile phone.”
In northern Arakan, the Bangladesh mobile is common uses for people to communicate each other, but it is illegal for using inside Burma. If anyone was found with mobile, he/she was sentenced 1-5 year jail term. All the officer from Burma and Buddhist community are using Bangladeshi mobile phone freely but using Bangladesh mobile by Rohingya is illegal, said a student from Maungdaw.
