Drug smuggling increase day by day in Burma-Bangladesh border

Teknaf, Bangladesh: Smuggling of methamphetamine (Yaba) tablets are being increased along the Bangladesh-Burma border day by day, Hashim, a local from Teknaf said.
“The Yaba tablets are being smuggled to Bangladesh from Burma by a group of drug dealers from Maungdaw , Teknaf and along the border.”
On being tipped off, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) from Dum Dum Meah check-post of Teknaf, Battalion No. 42 seized nearly Yaba tablets 2,000 after checking a Silver Line bus on May 20, BGB official said.

The BGB arrested the driver and helper of Silver Line bus –plying Teknaf to Dhaka- for involving in drug smuggling. Later, they were handed over to Teknaf police for further investigation.

Besides, BGB of Dum Dum Meah check-post also arrested a Bangladeshi with Yaba tablets 860 worth taka over (two million) from a S. Alam bus after investigating it on May 22, at about 10:00 am while it was going to Chittagong from Teknaf, said a source of BGB.

However, the smuggler was handed over to Teknaf police station by BGB. Police has filed a case against him regarding this connection, official said.

According to different sources, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and police seize Yaba tablets along the Bangladesh border every single day, said a trader from Teknaf.

The Bangladeshi authorities are trying to stop the trafficking of drugs into their country, and have recently tightened security along the Burma-Bangladesh border, an official said.
