Bangladesh Prime Minister seeks Thai support for Rohingya issue

Dhaka, Bangladesh: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sought Thai support to convince the Burmese leadership for giving citizenship to the Rohingyas to stop their displacement in Bangladesh as refugees while meeting with Thai counterpart Yingluck Shinawatra at the Chiang Mai International Convention and Exhibition Centre on the sidelines of 2nd Asia Pacific Water Summit on May 20, according to United News Bangladesh (UNB) and Dhaka Tribune.
In a bilateral meeting with her Thai counterpart Yingluck Shinawatra, Sheikh Hasina also sought Bangkok’s support to become ASEAN dialogue partner, integrated part of East West Corridor and Mekong Ganga Cooperation.

At Press briefing Bangladesh PM’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said both the leaders discussed issues of mutual interests and the activities of the Joint Trade Committee and problems related to the beginning of construction work of Dhaka Elevated Expressway.

Sheikh Hasina hoped that Italian-Thai Development Company would start work of the construction of the 26-kilometer expressway soon after approval of the revised alignment from the Cabinet Committee.

Bangladesh Prime Minister recalled the visit of Shinawatra to Dhaka in last December – has initiated a new era of relations between Bangladesh and Thailand. “Bangladesh considers Thailand as a very close friendly neighbor.”
