Refugee woman gang raped at border

Teknaf, Bangladesh: An unregistered refugee woman from Leda camp (Tal) was gang raped by a group of local youths on April 21 at about 4:00 pm when she went to a stream to fetch drinking water, Hussain, a refugee from the camp said.
The victim is identified— as Begum, not real name (27), wife of late Rashid ( not real name), from unregistered Leda refugee camp (Tal) under the Teknaf police station.

According to refugees, Begum accompanied by other refugee children went to the stream nearby forest to fetch drinking water, but suddenly she was abducted by four local youths without knowing to other refugees, said a close relative of the victim

She was brought to the deep forest and was gang raped by youths one by one. On information, some refugees from the camp rushed to the spot and recovered her in critical condition, but, the culprits ran away.

However, she was brought and admitted at Leda clinic by the refugees. She is being treated by the doctors of Muslim Aids, said another refugee.

The refugee also said that the local youths (culprits) belong to Alikhali village under the Teknaf police station of Cox’s Bazar district.

The Rohingya refugees have been facing from the shortage of drinking water since March 2013 as the water dried up in the dam, which was built nearby mountain sideways by Muslim Aids, Ayoub a refugee committee member from the camp said.

According to sources, there is no security of unregistered refugees along the Bangla- Burma border as locals frequently disturb refugees and hunt the refugee women in the forests, streams and somewhere else.

“Rohingyas fled to Bangladesh from Burma and took shelter for security in Bangladesh as a Muslim country, but they face same problem here like Burma,” said a Refugee preferring not to be named.

This matter was informed to the concerned authorities, but they said that they would take action against the culprits.
